Bodyweight training has made a huge comeback over the past few years.
It makes sense. If you want to consider yourself truly fit, you need to integrate functional exercises into your workout regimen moves that activate several muscle groups and mimic the type of movements that you actually perform in real life. And while we love the pump, some of the basic isolation exercises traditionally associated with bodybuilding (hello, heavy bicep curls) won’t improve your agility, coordination or power and won’t get you to work through different planes of movement.
Enter #calisthenics, the latest fitness movement to take over Instagram. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines calisthenics as “systematic rhythmic bodily exercises performed usually without apparatus”. The word comes from the Greek terms kalos (beautiful) and sthenos (strength). And “beautiful strength” is an accurate description of the incredible feats these Insta-famous athletes are able to accomplish with their bodies.
When talking about the calisthenics workout craze, the human flag exercise is perhaps the first image that comes to mind. This visually-impressive move requires a huge amount of sheer strength, control and stability and we bet your favorite bodybuilder can’t even come close to performing it.
Watch and learn some of the most effective and useful workouts performed by different Calisthenics around the world.
