This month the government has published its new guidelines on physical activity (see link below). The paper recommends doing strength exercises twice a week. The reason is to maintain bone health and muscle mass so people can keep being active in the activities they enjoy.
Strength means the ability to carry out work against load, this can mean the load of your own body such as climbing stairs, the load of an object such as carrying shopping or digging or you may choose to go to the gym or buy yourself some free weights or resistance bands.
Pickwick Physiotherapy are always looking to help people in Corsham, Melksham, Chippenham and all the villages in between to develop their strength so they can be at their prime for the activities they have to do and want to do. We have put together a short video to help you get started, the idea is to do the exercises twice a week at a minimum. Everyone is different so some people will be able to repeat an exercise 20 times other will manage 3 times, count the number of times you can do the movement until you feel your muscle shake slightly, start to feel warm and perhaps burn. Some exercises will be easier for you than others.
